A quick chutney to make and super yummy to taste. Parap/dal/lentil is mostly readily availabale at home.. Its so easy to make this dish. I have tried this with toor dal as well as moong dal.. Also tried with a combination of toor.and moong dal…very happy with the outcome.

Ingredients

1.  Toor dal or moong dal       1 cup
2. Red chillies (whole)               5-6
3. Black pepper (whole)            1tsp
4. Asofoetida                               1/2tsp
5. Salt to taste
6. Til oil                                         2tsp
7. Coconut                                    2 cups
8. Mustard 1 tsp, urid dal 1/2 tsp and whole red chilli 1 for seasoning.
9. 1 small piece of tamarind (optional)

Method
1. Add 1 tsp til oil in a pan and fry the dals, pepper and red chillies.
Note: if you are using the rock asofoetida, then, add it to the oil first and let it become soft. Then add all the other ingredients.

2. Once the dal mixture is fried well and it turns pink, turn off the gas.

3. In the mixer pot, grind the coconut, fried mixture of dals, tamarind, salt and grind with a little water.

4. In a pan add 1 tsp til oil and add mustard, once it crackles add urid dal (mash dal) and whole red chilli. Add the seasoning to the thogayal…

Yummy thogayal is ready. It can be served with hot rice with a little til oil or can be served with idli and dosa. Also tastes good as a second dish with kootu.
